HSA & FSA

Last Updated: 26 August 2026

Many people can pay for treatment through Science & Co using money they have already set aside, tax free, in a health savings account or a flexible spending account. If you have one of these accounts, it is worth checking before you pay another way.

The Short Version

  • You can pay with an HSA or FSA debit card at checkout, in the same way as any other card.
  • If your card is declined, or you would rather not use it directly, you can pay with a normal card and submit for reimbursement from your account administrator.
  • We provide an itemized receipt for every order, which is the document most administrators ask for.

What an HSA and an FSA Are

A health savings account (HSA) is a tax advantaged account you can use for qualified medical expenses. It is paired with a high deductible health plan, the money is yours, and it rolls over from year to year.

A flexible spending account (FSA) is a tax advantaged account funded through your employer. It also covers qualified medical expenses, but the money usually has to be used within the plan year or a short grace period after it, so unused funds can be forfeited.

In both cases you are spending pre-tax money, which means treatment effectively costs less than paying with post-tax income.

Using Your Card at Checkout

Enter your HSA or FSA debit card at checkout exactly as you would any other card. Approval is decided by your card issuer and plan administrator, not by us.

If the card is declined, that usually means the administrator could not automatically classify the purchase, not that the expense is ineligible. Pay with another method and submit the receipt for reimbursement instead. Declines are common with telehealth and pharmacy purchases and are rarely the final answer.

Getting Reimbursed

If you pay with a normal card, you can usually claim the money back from your HSA or FSA. Most administrators want an itemized receipt showing the date, the provider or pharmacy, a description of the product or service, and the amount paid.

Every Science & Co order comes with an itemized receipt by email. You can also find your receipts in your account at portal.science.co at any time. If you need anything further for a claim, contact support@science.co and we will help.

What Is Usually Eligible

Prescription medication prescribed for you by a licensed provider is generally a qualified medical expense, as are the costs of the telehealth consultation associated with it. Because eligibility depends on your specific plan and on your circumstances, we cannot tell you in advance whether a particular purchase will be approved.

Some plans require a Letter of Medical Necessity for certain treatments, particularly weight management. If your administrator asks for one, request it through support in your account at portal.science.co. We will pass the request to your provider, who can supply one where clinically appropriate.

Important

Science & Co does not provide tax advice. Whether an expense qualifies, and whether it is reimbursable from your particular account, is determined by your plan administrator and by the rules that apply to you under the Internal Revenue Code. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of eligibility, coverage or reimbursement. If you are unsure, speak to your plan administrator or a qualified tax professional before relying on an HSA or FSA to pay.

Note also that the Services are provided on a cash pay basis. Neither we nor the providers and pharmacies accessible through the Services submit claims to Medicare, Medicaid or any private insurer on your behalf.

Questions

If you are unsure whether your account will cover a treatment, or you need documentation for a claim, contact us at support@science.co or on 1 (844) 587-5747 and we will do what we can to help.
