What NAD+ Actually Does, Without the Hype

NAD+ gets talked about like a miracle. Here is the honest version of what the research supports.

NAD+ turns up in longevity conversations with a great deal of confidence attached to it. The underlying biology is real and genuinely interesting. The marketing has run some distance ahead of the evidence.

 

The part that is well established

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is a coenzyme present in every cell you have. It is central to converting food into usable energy, and it is required by enzymes involved in DNA repair and routine cellular maintenance. Without it, metabolism stops. That is not a marketing claim, it is basic biochemistry.

 

NAD+ levels also decline with age. That much is measurable and has been observed repeatedly.

The part that is still open

The leap people tend to make is from levels decline with age to raising levels reverses ageing. That step has not been demonstrated in humans. Studies on precursors such as NR and NMN do show that supplementation can raise NAD+ markers in blood. What is far less settled is whether that translates into meaningful changes in energy, cognition or lifespan.

 

Human trials to date have been small and short, and the results have been mixed.

 

How to think about it

Treat NAD+ as a reasonable, low drama part of a longevity plan rather than the centre of one. Sleep, resistance training, protein intake and blood pressure all carry far stronger evidence. If you are curious about NAD+, the honest framing is that you are early, not that you are behind.
